Blockx’s Rib Changes Every Long Rally

Alexander Blockx has already shown he can hurt Karen Khachanov with the kind of first-strike tennis that has carried him into his first US Open quarterfinal. The question is whether his body will allow him to keep producing it.

Blockx developed a sharp pain in his rib during the second game against Francisco Cerundolo. Medication helped him finish, but afterward he admitted the problem had been serious enough that losing the third set might have forced him to retire.

Khachanov brings a different physical question after needing nearly four hours and five sets to eliminate Learner Tien.

Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line makes Khachanov -172 and Blockx +140. Khachanov -2.5 games is -116, Blockx +2.5 is -105, with the total at 40. The betting lean is Karen Khachanov -2.5 games at -116.

Blockx Was Closer to Stopping

The score against Cerundolo does not reveal how precarious Blockx’s afternoon became. He needed treatment early for rib pain, then medication before the discomfort eased late in the match. Even afterward, Blockx said he could still feel the injury.

That creates an unusual problem for a player whose aggressive baseline game depends on explosive rotation.

Blockx has been attacking throughout his breakthrough run. Against Cerundolo, he converted six of 12 break points and survived 14 of the 17 he faced. Those numbers show both sides of Wednesday’s problem: he can create damage quickly, but he may also have to defend repeatedly against a player capable of making service games physically expensive.

Khachanov’s Four Hours Cut Both Ways

Khachanov does not arrive fresh enough for the injury angle to stand alone. His 7-5, 4-6, 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-4 victory over Tien lasted almost four hours. He had to recover from two sets to one down before taking the fourth comfortably and eventually breaking through in the fifth.

That workload gives Blockx an obvious route into the match. If the Belgian can shorten exchanges with his serve and forehand, Khachanov’s recovery becomes relevant before the rib does.

But Khachanov also showed something tactically useful against Tien: once rallies became sustained and physical, he was able to keep imposing pressure deep into a fifth set.

Seventeen Break Points Leave a Warning

Cerundolo created 17 break opportunities against Blockx and converted only three. That survival rate helped produce the four-set victory, but repeating it against Khachanov while managing a rib problem is a dangerous assumption. Blockx cannot depend indefinitely on escaping service games after they become complicated.

No tour-level head-to-head provides a shortcut. This is their first meeting. The handicap therefore comes down to whether Blockx can maintain enough first-strike aggression to prevent Khachanov from repeatedly testing his movement and rotation.

Blockx’s upside makes laying a large number unattractive. He has already beaten No. 5 seed Flavio Cobolli during this tournament, and his aggressive game can compress sets quickly enough to keep the scoreboard close.

But 2.5 games asks considerably less of Khachanov than the moneyline price suggests. One compromised Blockx service stretch can create most of that margin, particularly if the rib prevents him sustaining the same serving and groundstroke mechanics over several hours.

The risk is Khachanov’s own recovery after the Tien marathon. If his legs are flat, Blockx can dictate before physical endurance becomes relevant.

At -116, however, the more important unresolved physical problem belongs to the underdog.

Karen Khachanov -2.5 games at -116 is the betting position.
