Bejlek Found the Answer in Abu Dhabi. Now Alexandrova Gets Another Look At The Same Puzzle

Sara Bejlek was ranked outside the Top 100 when she walked into the Abu Dhabi final against Ekaterina Alexandrova in February. She left with her first WTA title.

Bejlek won 7-6(5), 6-1, breaking Alexandrova four times and winning 56.1% of the points played. Six months later, they meet again in Cincinnati with Bejlek at No. 35 and Alexandrova at No. 18.

The rankings have moved. The problem Alexandrova faces has not. Bejlek has already seen the blueprint. Alexandrova has to burn it.

Abu Dhabi Started With the Return

The February final turned on Alexandrova’s inability to protect the first two shots of her service points.

She landed 59.5% of first serves and won only 54.5% of those points. Bejlek won 45.5% of her first-serve return points, reached seven break points and converted four. Alexandrova produced no aces across 10 service games.

Alexandrova’s game works best when the serve creates a short return and her next strike arrives with her feet set. Bejlek kept putting the ball back deep enough to deny that sequence. Once the rally moved beyond the opening exchange, Alexandrova had to generate pace while adjusting her position rather than simply stepping through the ball.

Bejlek’s left-handed forehand added another layer. The crosscourt pattern repeatedly moved Alexandrova towards her backhand side before Bejlek changed direction.

Cincinnati’s quicker hard court gives Alexandrova more assistance on serve. But she still has to land it.

Bejlek Hasn’t Stopped Since February

Abu Dhabi could have become the spectacular week that disappears into a season. Instead, Bejlek has reached No. 35 and arrived in Cincinnati with enough hard-court evidence behind her to remove the novelty from the story.

Her tournament began with a 6-0, 6-2 demolition of former Cincinnati champion Karolina Pliskova. She then beat Barbora Krejcikova 7-6(5), 6-4.

The Pliskova result showed what happens when Bejlek gets immediate access to an opponent’s service games. Krejcikova required more patience. Bejlek had to stay with the first set through the tiebreak and then maintain enough depth to prevent Krejcikova from taking over from the baseline.

Alexandrova Arrives With Miles in Her Legs

Alexandrova needed two hours and 40 minutes to beat qualifier Anna Blinkova in her Cincinnati opener, recovering from a set down to win 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-5.

Earlier this month in Toronto, Alexandrova reached the quarterfinals after beating World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Her ability to strike through the court remains intact when the serve and first groundstroke connect.

Bejlek is unlikely to give her many stationary targets. The Czech’s value in this matchup comes from making Alexandrova strike while moving, particularly once the initial attack has been absorbed. A deep neutral ball can force another lateral adjustment. A higher forehand can change the contact point. The left-handed crosscourt angle can open the backhand corner.

The Serve Can Rewrite February

Alexandrova’s clearest route away from the Abu Dhabi pattern is her first serve. Bejlek faced 74 Alexandrova service points in that final and won 36. Alexandrova won just 38. There were too few cheap holds and too many service games in which Bejlek reached neutral footing.

A quicker Cincinnati court gives Alexandrova the chance to change those first contacts. If the serve pushes Bejlek outside the doubles alley or jams her through the body, Alexandrova can receive the next ball inside the baseline. Her flat backhand becomes especially difficult to defend once she can take it early and change direction.

Bejlek vs Alexandrova Betting Analysis

Bookmaker Sportsbook opened Alexandrova at -118 and Bejlek at -104. Alexandrova gives 0.5 games at -111, with Bejlek +0.5 at -110. The total is 21.5 games, with the over at -116 and the under at -105.

Seventeen ranking places separate them. Almost nothing separates the prices.

Bejlek enters without dropping a set in Cincinnati and already owns a straight-sets victory over Alexandrova this season. Alexandrova has the larger serve and heavier first-strike game, but needed three sets and nearly three hours to get through Blinkova.

The total of 21.5 also leaves room for a match very different from Abu Dhabi’s second set. Alexandrova has a faster court and six months of evidence showing exactly where the first encounter escaped her.

Betting Lean

Alexandrova can change this matchup through her serve. She cannot change what happens if Bejlek repeatedly neutralises it.

That happened in February. Bejlek has since climbed into the Top 40 and opened Cincinnati by removing Pliskova and Krejcikova without losing a set.

At -104, the rematch offers almost no premium for finding out whether Alexandrova has solved her.

Projected Score: Sara Bejlek 7-5, 4-6, 6-4
