Arthur Fils Gets to Choose the Side

The price on Fils to win is difficult to justify at -435. The handicap is more interesting because this matchup has produced an unusually one-sided history. Still, Monday brings a version of Arthur Fils who believes something important has changed since they last met.

The opening line at Bookmaker Sportsbook is Arthur Fils -435, Stefanos Tsitsipas +325, with Fils -5.5 games at -109 and the total set at 36.5.

Arthur Fils Likes Where His Serve Is Going

“I was pretty happy with my serve in Cincinnati,” Fils said at US Open media day. “I was pretty accurate on my spots.”

That is more useful for Monday than another recital of his Cincinnati title.

Fils can use those locations to establish the first forehand and force Tsitsipas to defend immediately rather than allowing the Greek to dictate with his own forehand. If Fils repeatedly gets the first attacking ball, Tsitsipas has to find a way to change the geometry before the Frenchman settles into that pattern.

Fils’ Cincinnati final provides some current evidence behind his assessment. Against Frances Tiafoe, he struck 11 aces against one double fault and won 67% of his second-serve points despite landing only 59% of his first serves.

For the Tennis Betting Hub, that makes the serve less about free points and more about what Fils can build immediately behind it.

Tsitsipas Has to Change the Picture

Tsitsipas already knows what happens when Fils controls the first strike. Their Miami meeting in March finished 6-0, 6-1, with Fils winning 89% of his first-serve points and saving both break points he faced. Fils later rejected the idea that Tsitsipas’ 28 unforced errors had appeared on their own: “I forced those mistakes.”

That is the relevant piece of their 5-0 head-to-head, not the number itself.

Monday gives Tsitsipas five sets and a fresh court, but the unresolved problem remains how he keeps Fils from repeatedly constructing points on favorable terms.

Tsitsipas’ latest public emphasis has been mental rather than tactical. After beating Jenson Brooksby in Winston-Salem, he said “mindset” becomes decisive when points turn critical. He subsequently lost in straight sets to Aleksandar Kovacevic.

Against Fils, those critical moments could arrive particularly often on Tsitsipas’ second serve and in the opening exchanges of Fils’ service games.

Thirty-Six Games Leave Little Room

Fils says he has “never felt this prepared” for a Grand Slam. He also went 10-0 in deciding sets this season before arriving in New York and described his ability to keep winning difficult matches as primarily a product of mentality.

Tsitsipas therefore has two routes to threaten the handicap: disrupt Fils’ preferred first-strike patterns early or extend the match long enough to turn this into a physical and psychological examination.

Neither is reflected particularly generously by Fils’ -435 moneyline.

The -5.5 at -109 better reflects the matchup. It asks Fils to translate his advantages into scoreboard separation rather than charging bettors heavily simply for picking the winner.

The ATP Betting Guide angle is straightforward: the favorite’s price is prohibitive, but the mechanism behind his favoritism remains unusually specific.
