Angel City vs Washington Spirit: Trinity Rodman Is Breaking NWSL Records. Angel City May Not Care.
Trinity Rodman arrives in Los Angeles scoring more freely than she ever has in the NWSL. Washington arrives with the better record, the better table position, and, on paper, the better team.
Angel City have spent the last six matches making paper look remarkably disposable**. **They have taken points in five of six since the league’s June break, while Washington have lost two straight for only the third time since September 2023.
Washington are priced as narrow +144 favorites at Bookmaker Sportsbook, with Angel City at +174 and the draw at +240. That price asks a wonderfully awkward question: are you betting the team Washington have been all season, or the team they are right now?
Washington have the better résumé. Angel City have apparently stopped reading résumés.
The Previous Meeting Needed Four Goals To Settle Nothing
The most recent meeting finished 2-2 at BMO Stadium on September 18, 2025.
Washington struck first after Trinity Rodman won a penalty and then converted the rebound after Angelina Anderson saved her initial attempt. Angel City answered almost immediately through Evelyn Shores, who finished a move created by Gisele Thompson and Sveindís Jónsdóttir.
Angel City then moved ahead in the second half when Riley Tiernan’s shot was deflected into the net by Tara McKeown. Washington responded again, Croix Bethune heading in Leicy Santos’ diagonal delivery in the 71st minute. It was the first draw in the series.
The broader history is almost as tight. Washington leads the all-time series 4-3-1, with a 15-13 aggregate scoring advantage. Only one of the first eight meetings was decided by more than one goal.

Trinity Rodman Is Carrying Washington Again
Washington’s 4-3 defeat to North Carolina last weekend should have ended much earlier. The Spirit trailed 3-0, then Rodman appeared.
Her goal helped ignite a second-half recovery that eventually brought Washington level before Natalie Jacobs’ stoppage-time winner gave the Courage all three points. Trinity Rodman’s strike was her ninth league goal of 2026, already a single-season career high. It also gave her 60 regular-season goal contributions, 37 goals and 23 assists, making her the youngest player in NWSL history to reach that milestone.
Rodman does not need Washington to dominate possession before she becomes dangerous. She can receive wide, attack a defender directly, run beyond the back line, or create a shooting angle before the defensive block has properly settled.

Seattle Showed Angel City’s New Refusal To Go Away
Last weekend’s 2-2 draw in Seattle was another example. Angel City led before Sally Menti and Mia Fishel scored within two minutes to turn the match around. A year ago, that might have been enough to finish the evening.
Instead, substitute Prisca Chilufya entered in the 69th minute and equalized three minutes later, meeting Evelyn Shores’ long pass with a first-time volley over Claudia Dickey.
And it matters against Washington because the Spirit have repeatedly shown that matches can become stretched late. Their comeback against North Carolina proved they remain dangerous from losing positions, but conceding four at home also exposed how expensive open games can become.
Washington Have To Solve Their Absences
The Spirit travel without several important pieces. Leicy Santos is out with a hip injury. Lucia Di Guglielmo is unavailable with a lower-leg issue. Aubrey Kingsbury and Casey Krueger remain on maternity leave, while Mélissa Bethi and Monique Ngock are away on international duty.
Angel City have their own lengthy list. Jun Endo and Hina Sugita remain on season-ending injury designations with knee injuries, Sveindís Jónsdóttir is out with an ankle problem, Maiara Niehues has a lower-leg injury, and goalkeeper Hannah Seabert is unavailable with a hand issue.
Riley Tiernan Knows This Defense
Rodman may carry the larger story, but Riley Tiernan gives Angel City their most interesting attacking reference.
She scored twice in Angel City’s dramatic 4-3 win at Washington in May 2025, including the stoppage-time winner. She then forced the own goal that put Angel City 2-1 ahead in the return meeting later that year.
Tiernan therefore enters with unusual evidence against this opponent. She attacks the box aggressively, works between full-back and center-back, and does not need prolonged possession before becoming involved.
If Angel City can move possession quickly enough to prevent Washington from setting its defensive shape, Tiernan can make those gaps uncomfortable again.

This NWSL Match Will Want To Become Open
Bookmaker Sportsbook sets the total at 2.5 goals, with the over priced at -127 and the under at -104. Recent history explains why.
The last five meetings have produced 23 goals, averaging 4.6 per match. But historical scoring alone is not enough. The current tactical ingredients also point toward chances.
Washington possesses Rodman’s transition threat and Sofia Cantore’s movement through the final third. Angel City has shown they can keep attacking even when matches become stretched.
Readers using the Soccer Betting Hub and the NWSL Betting Guide should therefore look beyond the simple goals-per-game narrative. What matters is that both teams have reasons to push the match forward rather than protect a draw.
Betting Analysis
Bookmaker Sportsbook lists Washington Spirit at +144, Angel City at +174, and the draw at +240. On the Asian line, Angel City 0 is -102, while Washington 0 is -130.
The market is asking bettors whether Washington’s superior season should outweigh its immediate dip in form.
There is a reasonable argument that it should. The Spirit remain third in the table, Rodman is producing the best scoring season of her NWSL career, and Washington have shown enough attacking depth to score three times even on a poor night against North Carolina.
But Angel City are not playing like a straightforward home underdog. They have lost only once in six since the break, are producing heavy shot volume and have already demonstrated an ability to recover from difficult match states.
Betting Lean
Betting Lean: Angel City 0 (-102)
The draw-no-bet structure protects against another tight meeting while still backing the team arriving with the stronger recent rhythm.
The secondary angle is Over 2.5 goals (-127). The series history supports it, but more importantly, these teams in their current form do as well. Washington has just participated in a seven-goal game; Angel City has scored twice in each of their last two matches and continues producing significant shot volume.
