Angel City Scored in Two Minutes Last Time. Gotham Scored Three After That.

Kennedy Fuller needed barely two minutes to put Angel City ahead the last time these teams met. Gotham needed the second half.

Portilho equalized in the 47th minute, Lavelle scored four minutes later, and Howell added the third as Gotham turned an early deficit into a 3-1 victory. Angel City now get another look at the champions at BMO Stadium, carrying three consecutive draws and the return of several players who were unavailable earlier in the summer.

Gotham arrives with four consecutive wins and the best record in the NWSL. Angel City has never beaten Gotham at BMO Stadium.

Two Minutes Bought Angel City Almost an Entire Half

Fuller’s early goal in September forced Gotham to chase rather than dictate. Angel City protected that advantage until halftime, but Gotham changed the midfield picture after the break. Lavelle and Midge Purce entered, Portilho equalized almost immediately, and Lavelle followed before Angel City had properly reset.

Howell’s 68th-minute goal ended the contest. The sequence is worth revisiting because Gotham did not solve Angel City through one decisive transition. They increased the number of players receiving between midfield and defense, moved the ball faster through central areas, and forced Angel City to defend facing their own goal more frequently.

The 85th Minute Gave Sentnor Something She Had Been Missing

Sentnor’s first Angel City goal arrived against Washington last Sunday. She collected Savy King’s pass outside the box, moved laterally across the defensive line, and curled the equalizer into the top corner. She finished with three shots on target, more than any other Angel City player.

The goal matters beyond ending the wait. Sentnor has been getting into shooting positions without receiving the reward. Against Gotham’s compact defensive structure, Angel City needs players who can finish before the penalty area becomes crowded.

Thirteen Goals Conceded in Twenty Matches

Gotham’s defensive record has held up against different opponents and in different game states.

Before the 2-1 win over Kansas City, they recorded three consecutive 1-0 victories against Bay FC, Houston and San Diego. Their unbeaten run now stands at eight league matches.

Kansas City tested that structure immediately. Amelia White scored after 22 seconds. Gotham responded through Purce in the 13th minute and Sam Kerr in the 41st, then protected the lead through the second half.

Angel City’s recent draws against Kansas City, Seattle and Washington show they can stay in matches against strong opposition. Turning those competitive performances into wins requires finding a second goal rather than spending the final half-hour protecting the first.

Kerr’s Third Goal Came With a Club Record Attached

Kerr’s winner against Kansas City was her third goal since returning to Gotham and her 31st for the club across her two spells, making her Gotham’s all-time leading scorer.

She has three goals in seven appearances this season. Angel City cannot defend her only by keeping a center-back tight. Kerr’s movement across the line creates space for Shaw, Purce and Lavelle to arrive from different angles. Shaw supplied the assist against Kansas City, while Purce scored earlier in the same match.

The Soccer Betting Hub and NWSL Betting Guide are useful here because this matchup isn’t simply first place against a playoff outsider. Angel City have improved under interim coach Leif Smerud, going 3-3-1 in his first seven matches, while Gotham have continued producing results through several different attacking combinations.

Betting Analysis

Bookmaker Sportsbook lists Gotham at +111, Angel City at +250, and the draw at +220. The total is 2.5 goals, with the under priced at -138.

The moneyline gives Gotham only a modest favorite tag despite their 43 points, four-game winning streak, and historical dominance in this matchup.

Angel City’s recent competitiveness explains part of that restraint. They have drawn three straight, and Sentnor, King, and Sydney Leroux have all added something to the available attacking group.

The total is consistent with Gotham’s season. They have conceded 13 goals in 20 matches and recently produced three consecutive 1-0 wins before Kansas City pushed the score to 2-1.

Four Trips to BMO Have Produced One Result

Gotham has visited Angel City four times in regular-season play. They have won all four. The most recent was the most emphatic: a 4-0 victory in April 2025.

Angel City are playing better football now, and Sentnor gives them a direct shooting threat that can punish Gotham before the defensive block settles.

Gotham still carries more attacking routes and the stronger defensive record.
