Andreeva Keeps Reaching Gauff’s Locked Door

Mirra Andreeva has repeatedly pushed Coco Gauff close but hasn’t found the final step. Wednesday asks whether that changes now that Andreeva has shown she can recover when a match turns against her, while Gauff is converting more of the chances she creates.

Their Rome meeting captured the problem. Andreeva won the first set and later threatened Gauff’s 5-1 lead in the third, but Gauff still closed 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Andreeva now has to sustain her advantage rather than simply create one.

Gauff arrives with 10 consecutive victories and 20 consecutive sets won. Andreeva arrives after recovering from a set down against Anastasia Potapova.

Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line prices Gauff at -196 and Andreeva at +158. Gauff is -3 games at -115, with Andreeva +3 at -106. Pick: Coco Gauff -3 (-115).

Potapova Forced Andreeva Somewhere New

Andreeva had not dropped a set through three rounds before Anastasia Potapova took the opener from her on Monday.

Her response is the most relevant evidence for Wednesday. Andreeva admitted she initially did not know what to do, but recovered to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in just under two and a half hours. It was her ninth victory from a set down this season.

That matters because Gauff has repeatedly put Andreeva into exactly that position. In Rome this year, Andreeva won the opening set before Gauff reversed the match.

The question is no longer whether Andreeva can recover when a match changes. Monday answered that. It is whether she can stop Gauff from changing it in the first place.

Gauff Keeps Finding More Chances

Gauff’s fourth round supplied a different kind of evidence. She beat Iva Jovic 6-1, 6-4, converting five of 11 break points. Afterward, Gauff identified the improvement herself: she was finally converting more of the opportunities she created. She finished with 18 winners and 15 unforced errors.

Her current run is difficult to ignore. Gauff has won 10 straight matches, including the Cincinnati title, and has not lost a set in New York.

There is also no verified physical concern entering the quarterfinal. Gauff described one long game against Jovic as exhausting, but not as an injury issue. Andreeva likewise completed nearly two and a half hours against Potapova without a reported physical problem of her own.

The WTA Betting Guide provides additional context for game spreads where a strong favorite still has to create separation on the scoreboard.

Five Wins Still Leave One Opening

The 5-0 head-to-head can easily become the entire story. Gauff herself is resisting that interpretation.

After beating Jovic, she acknowledged that the record favors her but emphasized that her matches against Andreeva are never easy. That assessment fits their latest meeting better than the unbeaten record does. Gauff needed five match points to finish the Rome quarterfinal after Andreeva threatened her two-break lead in the deciding set.

Andreeva has also changed since some of those earlier defeats. She is now a Grand Slam champion, having won Roland Garros this season, and Monday’s recovery against Potapova extended her record from a set down at majors this year to 3-1.

But the spread asks a narrower question than whether Andreeva can finally beat Gauff.

Gauff has produced the cleaner US Open so far. She has yet to surrender a set, while Andreeva has just needed three sets and almost two and a half hours to reach the quarterfinal. More importantly, the most recent evidence between them shows Gauff surviving even after Andreeva established the early advantage.

Three games is not an enormous margin if Wednesday follows that pattern again. Andreeva has come closer. She still has to prove she can finish the job.

Coco Gauff -3 games (-115) is the betting lean.
