Next up in our preview of the 2014 Kentucky Derby entries is a personal favorite of mine named Wicked Strong.
Although California Chrome is the crown jewel of the 2014 Kentucky Derby entries, I feel that Wicked Strong is a contender that could pull the upset if he continues his recent improvement. Wicked Strong is a horse that hasn’t shown a ton of consistency over his two and three-year-old campaigns but he has all the talent in the world and his last run in the Wood Memorial was outstanding.
Other 2014 Kentucky Derby entries we have previewed:
Wicked Strong beat other 2014 Kentucky Derby entries like Samraat and Uncle Sigh while winning the Wood Memorial and he really didn’t seem like he had to push himself all that much in the race. This is a horse that has gotten better with distance and the extra length of the Kentucky Derby should suit his running style perfectly.
It took two tries for Wicked Strong to break his maiden at Belmont Park before he took a huge jump up in competition while finishing 3rd in the Remsen Stakes. From there he disappointed with a 9th place finish in the Holy Bull Stakes and then looked lost while finishing 4th in an allowance at Gulfstream Park before finally realizing his potential at the perfect time while taking down the 1 1/8-mile Wood Memorial in a time of 1:49:31.
The pedigree is absolutely breathtaking for this horse as he was sired by Hard Spun who finished 2nd in the 2007 Kentucky Derby and top 4 in all Triple Crown races that year. Hard Spun is, of course, just one generation removed from Northern Dancer who won the 1964 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes before finishing 2nd in the Belmont Stakes. The dam’s side is no less impressive as Moyne Abbey was sired by Charismatic who won the 1999 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes before finishing 3rd in the Belmont.

This is a horse that has underperformed most of his racing career but that Wood Memorial run makes me think that he finally “gets it”. The pedigree is better than any other of the potential 2014 Kentucky Derby entries and his poor runs leading up to the Wood Memorial make me think that we’ll get some decent odds on this guy on race day. California Chrome may have the better resume’ on paper, but there isn’t a horse amongst the 2014 Kentucky Derby contenders with as much potential to win the Triple Crown as Wicked Strong.
