Next up in our series of 2014 Kentucky Derby entries is a preview of a fast riser named Vicar’s In Trouble.
There wasn’t a ton of buzz surrounding Vicar’s In Trouble until recently but now it appears he’s set to be one of the top 3 favorites among the 2014 Kentucky Derby entries. This horse isn’t big on experience and I’m not personally sold on his ability to compete in the 2014 Kentucky Derby on May 3rd, but certain racing insiders have a high opinion on Vicar’s In Trouble and he deserves a look when you bet on the “Run for the Roses”.
Vicar’s In Trouble failed to break maiden at Keeneland on a synthetic surface to start his career but did so next time out at Fairgrounds. He then won the Lecomte Stakes before finishing 3rd in the Risen Star Stakes with another of the 2014 Kentucky Derby entries in Intense Holiday besting him in the latter. Vicar’s In Trouble took home the Louisiana Derby last time out but it’s tough to know what to take out of the win considering his final time of 1:50:77 was a bit slow compared to the other Kentucky Derby entries in the 2014 field at the same 1 1/8-mile distance.

In Vicar’s In Trouble’s defense, he didn’t really need to run any faster in his Louisiana Derby win as Intense Holiday (2nd place finisher) was far enough in back that the winner could coast down the stretch. That being said, generally with an uncontested lead horses pull away even further and that simply didn’t happen. Vicar’s In Trouble is a speed horse who isn’t running particularly fast in Kentucky Derby preps and I’m not sure if I’ll have a place for him in any exotics at this point.
Other 2014 Kentucky Derby entries we have previewed:
This Kentucky Derby entry was sired by Into Mischief who raced 2 of his 3 career graded starts on a synthetic surface and only ran once at a mile or longer, although that run was a dirt win in the CashCall Futurity so perhaps he was used incorrectly. Into Mischief was sired by Harlan’s Holiday whose bloodline has produced some excellent Kentucky Derby entries over the years. Harlan’s Holiday took 7th in the Kentucky Derby back in 2002.
Vicar’s In Trouble also gets some distance on his dam’s side as Vibrant was sired by Vicar who regularly ran at longer than a mile. That being said he kind of flamed out after winning the Fountain of Youth and the Florida Derby as a 3-year-old, finishing 18th in the Kentucky Derby and 10th in the Preakness Stakes while never finishing in the top 3 over his last 7 races.
I have no doubt that Vicar’s In Trouble can hold a steady pace over the Kentucky Derby distance but I have serious reservations he’ll be able to contend with the other elite 2014 Kentucky Derby entries. The pedigree and results aren’t there for me, but there are many horse racing insiders who are high on this guy and he’ll try to go wire-to-wire at post time of the 2014 Kentucky Derby.
