One of the 2014 Kentucky Derby contenders that is getting majorly overlooked is none other than Samraat.
Samraat probably won’t be one of the top 5 or 6 betting favorites at post time of the 2014 Kentucky Derby but there are some big reasons that I think he’ll be able to crack the top 3 when the race is finished. This Kentucky Derby contender is coming off of a loss in the Wood Memorial and that has soured many horse racing bettors on him, but it has also given us much nicer betting odds to work with if you can see the value in this three-year-old.
I’ve made it very clear that I’m a huge fan of Wicked Strong in the 2014 Kentucky Derby and that is the horse that bested Samraat in the Wood Memorial for his first career loss. Before that Samraat has broken his maiden at Belmont Park, won an allowance at Aqueduct, then easily won the Damon Runyon, Withers Stakes, and Gotham Stakes (all at Aqueduct) before not having quite enough against Wicked Strong.
There aren’t many 2014 Kentucky Derby contenders in the field this year with 5 victories in 5 tries and you have to remember that Samraat lost to a monster and has never been outside of the top 2 in 6 career starts. He’s been on dirt for all of them and has plenty of experience at distance with his last 4 races all coming at longer than a mile.
Other 2014 Kentucky Derby contenders we have previewed:
Samraat is sired by Noble’s Causeway who was 14th in the 2005 Kentucky Derby and 6th later in the year at Preakness Stakes. Noble’s Causeway is of course sired by turf superstar Giant’s Causeway and his offspring have taken naturally to dirt and shown they can run forever so the Kentucky Derby distance won’t be an issue for Samraat and could actually help him improve from that Louisiana Derby loss considering the added ground to run.
Bet on the 2014 Kentucky Derby at 5Dimes Sportsbook and you’ll receive a 50% cash bonus on top of your first deposit if you click on the link in this paragraph to get signed up! It’s one of the best bonuses in the industry from what many consider to be the elite horse racing sportsbook in the world. These guys offer normal wagering and also will have head-to-head matchups up on the day of the Kentucky Derby where all you have to do is pick a horse to finish in front of another horse which many prefer to picking a race winner.
The pedigree is also strong on the dam’s side for Samraat as Little Indian was sired by Indian Charlie who won the Santa Anita Derby in 1998 before taking 3rd in the Kentucky Derby before his career was abruptly ended. Samraat has distance pedigree on both sides and the only horse who I like better when it comes to bloodlines is Wicked Strong.
In a race as congested as the Kentucky Derby it’s safe to say anything can happen but there are only a few contenders that I’m confident can finish the race in a strong time no matter the conditions and this is one of them. Although I still prefer Wicked Strong, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all to me if Samraat has a better lane and steals the show. Ultimately this is one of the 2014 Kentucky Derby contenders who I will definitely be using in my betting exotics on race day.
